Why Should I Consider Braces?
Braces are an established solution for patients with crooked, crowded, or otherwise misaligned teeth. While the most obvious benefit of orthodontic treatment is an improved appearance, if you are suffering from discomfort due to misalignment, traditional metal braces may provide relief. By shifting teeth into their proper positions, treatment can prevent excessive wear and tear, as well as alleviate tension in the jaw. Patients with straighter teeth can also brush and floss more easily, which prevents decay and gum disease.
How Traditional Orthodontics Work
Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands. A bracket is attached to each tooth and an archwire is run through the brackets. Rubber bands are then placed around the brackets to help keep the wire in place. Together, this system gently moves the teeth into proper alignment.
Additionally, inter-arch elastics are used to apply extra tension and adjust the positioning of the lower jaw. Elastics can significantly impact the efficiency of your treatment since they help the teeth move more quickly. It is essential that patients follow the doctor's recommendations to ensure treatment progresses as planned.
What to Expect During Treatment
Typically, treatment with traditional braces lasts between 18 to 24 months. About every six to eight weeks, you will need to come in to have your braces adjusted. During these appointments, Dr. Eldin or Dr. Amer will bend or tighten the wires to guide the teeth into place. Throughout treatment, your doctor will carefully monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments.

Once your teeth and jaws have been properly realigned, your braces can be removed. You will typically be required to wear a retainer to maintain your results. Some patients need to wear their retainers full-time for six months, then every night for the following years, while others may need to wear them less frequently. Typically, retainers are necessary over the long-term, in some capacity, to prevent teeth from shifting out of place.
For patients who are concerned about noticeable metal brackets and wires, we also offer Crystal Clear Aligners® and Invisalign®. By using clear aligner trays, these treatments provide patients with a discreet alternative. Additionally, patients with minimal misalignment may even be able to conceal these imperfections with porcelain veneers. Your doctor will evaluate your unique case and provide all potential treatment options to create the beautiful smile you deserve.
